Cameroon: Key Country Statistics (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 1.4% (DHS 2004).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 0.4%, which appears to be 0.8% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 1.2% (DHS 2004).

Figures also suggest a 1.2% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 0.9% and 2.1% respectively (DHS 2004).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Cameroon is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (85%), with 5% having Type III (DHS 2004).

The Cameroonian government to date has not passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM; however, existing provisions of criminal codes could be applied to FGM (DHS 2004).
