Central African Republic (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 25.7% (MICS 2008). This appears to have decreased by 10.2% from 35.9% in 2000 (MICS 2000).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 18.7%, which appears to be 11.1% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 29.8% (MICS 2008). There seems to have been an 8.5% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 2000 (MICS 2000), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 27.2%. There is also a suggested 13.5% decrease in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from 43.3% in 2000 (MICS 2000).

Figures also suggest an 8.4% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 20.9% and 29.3% respectively (MICS 2008).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in the Central African Republic is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (92.4%), with 3.3% having Type III (MICS 2008).

The government of the Central African Republic has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (MICS 2008).
