Chad: Key Country Statistics (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 44.9% (DHS 2004). There appears to have been no increase or decrease in comparison to data from 2000 which also had the estimated prevalence at 44.9% (MICS 2000).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 43.4%, which appears to be 2.8% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 46.2% (DHS 2004). There seems to have been a 1.8% increase in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 2000 (MICS 2000), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 41.6%. There is also a suggested increase (1.2%) in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from figure in 2000 which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 45% (MICS 2000).

Figures also suggest a 2.6% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 47% and 44.4% respectively (DHS 2004).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Chad is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (74.7%), with 2.4% having Type III and 19.4 Type IV (DHS 2006).

The Chadian government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (UNFPA).
