Cote D'Ivoire: Key Country Statistics (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 36.4% (MICS 2006). This appears to have decreased from 44.5% in 1999 (DHS 1998-99).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 28%, which appears to be 15.8% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 43.8% (MICS 2006). There seems to have been a 13.2% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 1998/99 (DHS 1998-99), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 41.2%.

Figures suggest just a slight decrease (0.7%) in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from 44.5% in 1998/99 (DHS 1998-99). Figures also suggest a 5% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 33.9% and 38.9% respectively (MICS 2006).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Côte d’Ivoire is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (80%), with 5.7% having Type III and 6.1% Type IV (DHS 2006).

The government of The Côte D’Ivoire has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (MICS 2006).
