Ethiopia: Key Country Statistics (Nov 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 74.3% (DHS 2005). This appears to be a decrease of 5.6% from 79.9% in 2000 (DHS 2000).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 62.1%, which appears to be 19.1% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 81.2% (DHS 2005). There seems to have been a 8.6% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 2000 (DHS 2000), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 70.7%. There is also a suggested 2.4% decrease in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from 2003 which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 83.6% (DHS 2000).

Figures also suggest a 7% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 68.5% and 75.5% respectively (DHS 2005).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Ethiopia is Type I (62%), with 19% having Type II (Kitaw et al, 2008). The DHS does not collect data on the type of FGM performed in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (DHS 2005).
