FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 44.5% (MICS 2006). This appears to have decreased from 50% in 1998 (WHO 1998).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 43.5%, which appears to be 5.1% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 48.6% (MICS 2006).

Figures also suggest a 9.2% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas with estimated FGM prevalence at 39% and 48.2% respectively (MICS 2006).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Guinea-Bissau is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (91.7%), with 3.2% having Type III (MICS 2006).

The government of Guinea-Bissau has not to date passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM, however existing general provisions of criminal codes could be applied to FGM (MICS 2006).
