FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 95.6% (DHS 2005). This appears to have decreased by 3% from an estimated 98.6% prevalence in 1999 (DHS 1999).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 89.3%, which appears to be 9.3% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 98.6% (DHS 2005). There seems to have been a 7.3% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 1999 (DHS 1999), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 96.6%. However, figures suggest just a slight reduction of 0.5% in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from an estimated 99.1% in 1999.

Figures also suggest a very slight difference (2.5%) in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas with estimated FGM prevalence at 93.9% and 96.4% respectively (DHS 2005).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Guinea is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (86.4%), with 9.3% having Type III (DHS 2005).

The Guinean government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (DHS 2005).
