Liberia: Key Country Statistics (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 58.2% (DHS 2007). This appears to be a slight (1.8%) decrease from an estimated 60% prevalence in 1984 (Marshall R5 1984).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 35.9%, which appears to be 30.8% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 66.7% (DHS 2007).

Figures also suggest a 32.5% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 39.5% and 72% respectively (DHS 2007).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Liberia is Type II. (US Department of State, 2001). The DHS does not collect data on type of FGM performed in Liberia.

The Liberian government has not yet passed legislation that prohibits the practice of FGM (DHS 2007).
