Mali: Key Country Statistics (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 85.2% (DHS 2006). This appears to have decreased by 6.4% from 91.6% in 2001 (DHS 2001).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age range is estimated at 84.7% which appears to be only slightly less (0.2%) than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age range which is estimated at 84.9% (DHS 2006). However, there seems to have been a 6.5% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 2001 (DHS 2001), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 91.2% and there also seems to have been a 7.4% decrease in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from 2001 which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 92.3% (DHS 2001).

Figures also suggest a 6.5% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas with estimated FGM prevalence at 80.9% and 87.4% (DHS 2006).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Mali is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (75.8%), with 10.2% having Type III (DHS 2006).

There is currently no specific legislation prohibiting the practice of FGM by the Malian government although existing general provisions of criminal codes could be applied to FGM (DHS 2006).
