Mauritania: Key Country Statistics (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 72.2% (MICS 2007). This appears to have slightly increased by 0.9% from 71.3% in 2000/01 (DHS 2000-01).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 68%, which appears to be 7.4% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 75.4% (MICS 2007). However there seems to have been a 2.1% increase in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 2000/01 (DHS 2000-01), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 65.9%. Similarly, figures suggest an increase (3.7%) in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from 71.7% in 2000/01 (DHS 2000-01).

Figures also suggest a 24.4% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 59.7% and 84.1% respectively (MICS 2007).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Mauritania is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (73.9%), with 3.2% having Type III (DHS 2007).

The Mauritanian government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (MICS 2007).
