Niger: Key Country Statistics (May 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 2.2% (DHS 2006). This appears to have decreased by 2.3% from 4.5% in 1998 (DHS 1998).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 1.9%, which appears to be 1% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group at 2.9% (DHS 2006). There seems to have been a 3.1% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 1998 (DHS 1998), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 5%. There is also a suggested decrease of 0.9% in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from 3.8% 1998 (DHS 1998).

Figures suggest little difference (0.2%) in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 2.1% and 2.3% respectively (DHS 2006).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Niger is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (90.5%), with 13.3% having Type III (DHS 2006).

The government of Niger has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (DHS 2006).
