FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 28.2% (DHS 2005).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age range is estimated at 24.8%, 5.7% less than the 35-39 age range which is estimated at 30.5% (DHS 2005).

Figures also suggest a 12.7% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas with estimated FGM prevalence at 21.7% and 34.4% respectively (DHS 2005).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Senegal is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (82.7%), with 11.9% having Type III (DHS 2005).

The Senegalese government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (DHS 2005).
