FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 14.6% (DHS 2004/05).This appears to have decreased by 3.1% from 17.7% in 1996 (DHS 1996).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 9.1%, which appears to be 6.9% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 16% (DHS 2004/05). There seems to have been a 4.1% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15-19 when compared with figures from 1996 (DHS 1996), which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 13.2%. There is also a suggested 2.3% decrease in prevalence for women in the age group of 35-39 from 1996 which estimated FGM prevalence to be at 18.3% (DHS 1996).

Figures also suggest a 10.4% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 7.2% and 17.6% respectively (DHS 2004/05).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Tanzania is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (91.3%), with 2% having Type III (DHS 2006).

The Tanzanian government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (DHS 2004/05).
