Uganda: Key Country Statistics (Nov 2013)

FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 1.4% (DHS 2011). This appears to have decreased by 3.6% points from 5% in 1998 (WHO).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 1.00%, which appears to be 0.3% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 1.3%(DHS 2011).

New Figures show no difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 1.4% in both areas (DHS 2011).

Type I and Type II FGM most commonly occur in Uganda (US Department of State, 2001). The DHS does not collect data on type of FGM performed in Uganda.

The Ugandan government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (DHS 2006).
