FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 76% (DHS 2010, p.291).  This is a reduction of 0.6% from 76.6% in DHS 2003 (p.204), although in 2006, MICS (in UNFPA, 2013, p.1) recorded a figure of 72.5%, which suggests there was a slight increase between 2006 and 2010.

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15 to 19 age-group is estimated at 58%, which is significantly less than FGM prevalence in the 45 to 49 age-group, which is estimated at 89% (UNICEF, 2013, p.101).  There is a 7% reduction in prevalence for girls and women in the age group of 15 to 19 when compared with figures from DHS 2003 (p.205), which estimated FGM prevalence to be 65%.

Figures also suggest a 9.7% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 68.7% and 78.4% respectively (DHS 2010, p.291).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Burkina Faso is ‘cut, flesh removed’ (Type II) (77%).  17% have had Type 1 (cut, no flesh removed) and 1% have had Type III (sewn closed).  5% did not know what type of FGM they had undergone (DHS 2010,  p.291).

The Government of Burkina Faso has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM.
