FGM PREVALENCE RATE

The estimated prevalence of FGM in girls and women (15-49 years) is 5.8% (MICS 2006). This appears to have decreased by 44.2% from 50% in 1993 (National Committee on Harmful Traditional Practices 1993).

The prevalence of FGM in girls and women within the 15-19 age group is estimated at 1.3%, which appears to be 8.1% less than FGM prevalence in the 35-39 age group which is estimated at 9.4% (MICS 2006).

Figures also suggest a 3.2% difference in FGM prevalence between girls and women (15-49 years) who live in urban and rural areas, with estimated FGM prevalence at 4.1% and 7.3% respectively (MICS 2006).

The most prevalent type of FGM practised in Togo is ‘flesh removed’ (Types I and II) (85.7%), with 1.7% having Type III and 7.7 Type IV (MICS 2006).

The Togo government has passed legislation that specifically prohibits the practice of FGM (MICS 2006).
